Wow, what a find!
Who knew that situated in the neighborhood just south of Eastland Mall is this whimsical garden complex that includes St. Sabbas Russian Orthodox Church, its Monastery, Rose Gardens, Koi Pond, Gift Shop, and the definite highlight - Royal Eagle Restaurant!
The restaurant offers patrons Russian cuisine within the quaint setting of its charming & quasi-secret garden. I still can’t believe this place exists!

I started out with the Ukrainian Borscht Soup ($5) - really great! For the main course i ordered the Kulibiaka ($24), a delicious puff pastry stuffed with fresh tasty salmon and served with a side of roasted potatoes & veggies. Then, for dessert (make sure you leave room) we ordered & shared a fantastic Mulberry Cake ($7), Bread Pudding ($8), and Dobos Torte ($8) - all were excellent! : )

Here’s the inside scoop on Royal Eagle:
(1.) Limited Hours : : Open Tuesdays & Thursdays from 11am-2pm for their Russian Tea Luncheons and open for Dinner on Thursdays from 5pm-10pm.
(2.) Make a reservation! They get pretty booked up for lunch & dinner, so make sure you call them at least 2 weeks in advance…yes, they’re that busy!
(3.) Pricey! All items are a la carte so of course if you order a soup/salad + main entree + dessert + drinks, it might cost you around $50 per person. Nonetheless, the quality of food, flavors, atmosphere, and the chance to experience this unique dining establishment are all well worth the cost!
